“As a heatwave engulfs New York in the summer of 1889, the city’s top models begin turning up dead, one by one, suggesting the work of a single killer.

Society-girl-turned-investigative-journalist Genevieve Stewart is drawn into the case when Beatrice Holler, one of her friend Callie’s fellow models, is found with her throat cut. Genevieve and her compatriot, wealthy Daniel McCaffrey, are joined by Callie to seek out the suspects, which leads them to search for answers from the members of the elite, notorious gangsters, and the city’s most prominent painters.

In an era when London’s Jack the Ripper murders have everyone on edge, the police want to keep the killings quiet. But the bodies are piling up as fast as the suspects—and unless the killer is found, the simmering New York summer could boil over into madness.

Publishers Weekly–Belli’s evocative third Gilded Gotham mystery finds society-page reporter Genevieve Stewart and her sometime investigative partner, wealthy upstart Daniel McCaffrey, leaving Newport, R.I., in the summer of 1889 for New York City, because Genevieve’s artist’s-model friend, Callie Maple, wants her to look into the murder of a fellow model, Beatrice Holler. …, Genevieve and Daniel use their connections amongst the Astor 400 and the city’s underworld to try to unmask the fiend before another young woman is struck down. Appearances by real-life artists, such as painter William Merritt Chase, and descriptions of long-gone landmarks, such as the Elephantine Colossus at Coney Island, lend historical verisimilitude. At times, though, excessive background detail slows the plot and undermines the building of suspense. The growing attraction between Genevieve and Daniel gets a light, sympathetic touch. Anne Perry fans will be pleased.”
