ABOUT THE BOOK
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old Service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley and Peter Guillam himself are to be scrutinised under disturbing criteria by a generation with no memory of the Cold War and no patience with its justifications.
Interweaving past with present so that each may tell its own intense story, John le Carré has spun a single plot as ingenious and thrilling as the two predecessors on which it looks back: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John le Carré. The truth is that the man born David John Moore Cornwell in October 1931 in Poole, Dorset, England has long kept secrets – two in particular. For years he told the world he was not a spy during the Cold War, when, in fact, he was, just as he concealed the brutal truth about his deeply unhappy childhood. When Cornwell began writing his espionage thrillers – his first was Call For The Dead in 1961 – he was working for MI5. He moved on to work for MI6. His spymasters told him to publish his novels under a pseudonym. It’s said he chose John le Carré because it had a ‘foreign ring to it’ and was ‘mysterious’. le Carré means ‘the square’ in French. Just as significantly, le Carré also concealed the dreadful pain of his upbringing, which saw his mother, Olive, leave his rogue of a father Ronnie when he was just five years old. ‘I never knew my mother till I was 21,’ he accepts now. ‘I act like a gent but I am wonderfully badly born. My father was a trickster and a jailbird.’
Le Carré has resided in St Buryan, Cornwall, Great Britain, for more than 40 years, where he owns a mile of cliff close to Land’s End.
