The novel was shortlisted for the 2019 International Booker Prize. Antonia Lloyd-Jones’ translation was also longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Translated Literature. Tokarczuk was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature two months after the novel’s US release.
