Gianni is a formerly high-ranking policeman in Rome who was busted to the ranks before the Nic Costa series started. He normally works as Nic’s companion, a down-to-earth foil to Nic’s cultured lead. He is large, “ugly” but intelligent, with a wealth of experience on the job. All his colleagues are on leave when two bodies come into the morgue separately. He makes a connection when he sees that they each have odd socks, from two pairs. We see him setting about solving this Holmesian mystery!
A trinket, a toy of a story, but well worth the time!

If you haven’t read any of David Hewson’s books this is an ideal introduction into the Italian crime mysteries that he is so good at. If you have read some or all of them, then you may find this too short a read – I did. It’s well worth reading, don’t get me wrong, but I would have liked it to go on for longer. Where the beginning of the story was more paced, I felt the ending was a bit rushed – possibly due to the constrictions of the word length.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read focusing on one of Nic Costa’s side kicks, Gianni Peroni, who ends up being the only detective looking after the shop when two bodies are discovered in different areas of the Tiber river in Rome. It falls into Gianni Peroni’s hands to discover why the corpses are wearing what appears to be the same pair of odd socks.
