ABOUT THE BOOK
It’s 1956 and Bernie Gunther is on the run. Ordered by Erich Mielke, deputy head of the East German Stasi, to murder Bernie’s former lover by thallium poisoning, he finds his conscience is stronger than his desire not to be murdered in turn. Now he must stay one step ahead of Mielke’s retribution.
The man Mielke has sent to hunt him is an ex-Kripo colleague, and as Bernie pushes towards Germany he recalls their last case together. In 1939, Bernie was summoned by Reinhard Heydrich to the Berghof: Hitler’s mountain home in Obersalzberg. A low-level German bureaucrat had been murdered, and the Reichstag deputy Martin Bormann, in charge of overseeing renovations to the Berghof, wants the case solved quickly. If the Fuhrer were ever to find out that his own house had been the scene of a recent murder – the consequences wouldn’t bear thinking about.
And so begins perhaps the strangest of Bernie Gunther’s adventures, for although several countries and seventeen years separate the murder at the Berghof from his current predicament, Bernie will find there is some unfinished business awaiting him in Germany.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Philip Kerr (born 22 February 1956 in Edinburgh) was educated there and at a grammar school in Northampton. He studied Law and Philosophyat the University of Birmingham from 1974–1980, achieving a masters degree. Kerr worked as an advertising copywriter for Saatchi and Saatchi before becoming a full-time writer in 1989. He has written for the Sunday Times, the Evening Standard and the New Statesman.
He had an idea for a novel about a Berlin-based policeman, in 1936 and following several trips to Germany – and a great deal of walking around mean streets of Berlin – his first novel, March Violets, was published in 1989 and introduced the world to Bernie Gunther.
Kerr is married to fellow novelist, Jane Thynne. They live in Wimbledon, London, and have three children.

Jeff Harding is an American actor from Andover, Massachusetts who attended college in Brunswick, Maine. He is most famed for his narration of popular books into audio format. Notably, he has read The Da Vinci Code, The Bourne Identity, Kane and Abel and Secrets Of The Code. His acting career as speaking extras is well documented, appearing in such high profile productions as Alfie and Tomorrow Never Dies, Hackers and (with Michael Caine) Bullseye!.Now living in the United Kingdom (since the late 1970s), he has appeared in notable UK comedies such as The Armando Iannucci Shows, The Fast Show and Father Ted. He is also remembered for his role as Orrin Hudson in the 1980s BBC drama series Howards’ Way.
